Pick museum

The exhibition, which covers an area of some 200m2, provides the visitor with an insight into the past of a large scale company celebrating the 137th anniversary of its foundation .

The exhibition commemorates the famous Pick family members who founded and built the factory. The first two prints show their achievements in being awarded prestigious medallions won in Pécs, Arad and Budapest in 1888, 1890 and 1896.

The exhibition guides the visitor through the highly diverse procedures used in the preparation of Winter salami. These procedures developed by the Hungarian meat industry in the second half of the 19th century are still used for a product which is world famous today. Processed meat production generated a considerable number of specialised professions which eventually led to the fragmenting of the manufacturing process into the specialised units which we see today.

The 3rd and 4th posters give a pictorial insight into this process. Slaughter man in 1883, Meat Processing Hall of Nógrádi István at the end of the 19th century and five pictures of the slaughter house which was established in 1892. The pictures and remaining catalogues of the national exhibitions, held in Szeged and other cities in Hungary in 1876 and 1899, are illustrated on these posters as well.

The display of a futher 32 posters guides the visitor through the years of evoltion to a successful and internationally recognised company. The changing sites through the years illustrate the growth and success of the company. The montage of authentic documents from the archives indicate the increased share of both home and international markets which culminated in the Company achieving a Gold Medal for its products in Thessalonika in 1927 and a Grand Prize in Brussels in 1935.

The original Salami making process, fundamentally unchanged to the present day, is realistically presented to the visitor through a series of displays. In a series of entertaining frieses the visitor learns about the individual steps of deboning, preparation of Salami paste, filling, binding, smoking, ripening and packaging of the salami and in doing so will come to understand that Pick products are manufactured to the highest quality standards.

Increased market share over the years both at home and abroad resulted in a corresponding increase in production tonnages which is well illustrated by the numerous graphs displayed on the posters.

High quality products cannot be manufactured consistantly without modern day technology. Upgrading machinery has always been Company policy and in the mid 1960’s new plant was installed to control temperature and humidity in the production and maturing areas. This led to the manufacture of Salami on a twelve month basis – a huge step forward from relying on ambient temperatures and uncertainties of the weather.

The product range of Pick Szeged has changed remarkably and extended to include many new products. These products are well illustrated in the friese pictures of posters numbered 24-29 and the current market leading products are displayed in the remaining posters numbered 30 upwards. Modern day packaging lines indicate the extent to which Pick Szeged has progessed to satisfy the demands of the present day consumer.

This modern large scale manufacturer became the largest food processing company in Hungary.
